Ferrets are carnivores, and have very specific nutritional needs. Foods such
as Nutro Maxi Kitten, Science Diet, or ProPlan are not bad foods to feed your ferret.
You should not use "grocery store" bought foods such as Deli Cat, Meow Mix, etc., they
are nutritionally incomplete for ferrets and can lead to poor health.
One of the most nutritionally complete foods on today’s market is Totally Ferret.
In determining the food that you will feed your ferret, be sure to analyze the protein
and fat contents, as well as the primary ingredients of the food. The primary ingredient
should be a meat product as opposed to vegetable products. Chicken or poultry are excellent
primary ingredients. The protein content should be 32% or more and the fat content should be
at least 15% or higher. Ferrets should only be fed dry food. Feeding your ferret moist food
(unless duck soup for health reasons) will only encourage tooth and gum problems.
